Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii and of Japanese ancestry, Frank Satogata studied at the University of Minnesota, the Heatherly School of Fine Art in London, England, and Syracuse University. His personal search has focused on understanding the relationship between Japanese Calligraphy and Abstract Expressionism. Spontaneity of Brush Strokes and Evidence of Process are an important part of both and are, therefore, an essential part of his work. Being of Japanese ancestry and raised in a Western culture, he is constantly searching for ways to integrate the best of both into his identity as a painter.
