CAN REPRESENTATIVE MASSIE STAND THE HEAT?
Just days after the Oxford, Michigan school shooting, Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie (R-Ky) posted a Christmas card that featured a photo of his family each holding an assault weapon. The card asks Santa to “bring more ammo.” I wish I were making this up, but I am not.
Apparently, a lot of people tweeted their negative reactions to Representative Massie, so much so that Massie blocked voices critical of the card. Massie’s action prompted the Knight First Amendment Institute to send a four page letter alerting Massie to the fact that numerous courts have found that a Twitter account like Massie’s is a public forum, such that Massie’s efforts to block critical speakers violates the First Amendment.
I suspect Representative Massie is so enamored with the Second Amendment that be buzzed right past the First. But in addition to reading the First Amendment, it would be nice for Representative Massie to review Harry Truman’s quote – “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” Hoisting a gun in a photo op doesn’t make one a tough guy. Facing up to critics does.
