Does This Mean Big Government Is On Our Back Or Off?

I don’t always understand politics. On the one hand, I kind of associate with libertarians and conservatives the notion that government should dictate what we do or don’t as little as possible. This seems like a philosophy that would be seriously invested in protecting civil liberties. But that same group wants government to assume a diminished role, right? So what to make of proposed federal legislation to prohibit employers and schools from requiring employees, job candidates or students to hand over their social media passwords? The bill’s sponsor, two Democrats, believe it’s essential to protecting civil liberties. As Eliot Engle, one of the bill’s sponsors puts it: “[i]n a democratic country, people have a fundamental right to privacy.” So to keep Big Brother from prying into our lives, we need Big Brother to pass some additional regulation. As I say, I don’t always get politics.
