FTC Supports Data Security Legislation
The Federal Trade Commission testified before a Senate Subcommittee earlier this week that it supports proposed federal legislation that would require companies to adopt data security policies and to notify consumers in case of a data breach. The proposed bill the FTC testified about was introduced by Senators Pryor and Rockefeller in August of this year. There is no across the board federal legislation in this area, but 46 states have some sort of laws. It seems inevitable that Congress will pass something, but when that will be is anyone’s guess.
