Hall of Shame
This is sort of a follow up on my blog yesterday that discussed student speech. Here’s a list of the 10 Worst Colleges for Free Speech in 2015. The good news is that none of the schools that my wife, kids or I have attended (a total of 9) made the list. But it’s interesting to see how the schools that made the list garnered the distinction. In most cases, the list features schools that tried to suppress “offensive speech” — whether that speech came via obnoxious fraternity bros, student newspapers or passionate faculty. If any of these institutions care about getting off the list in 2016, they should remember that the First Amendment doesn’t exist to protect speech we like. It exists to protect speech we hate. Like it or not.
