New Life For Cameras In The Courtroom?
So maybe Chuck Grassley doesn’t always remember to turn off his cell phone and maybe his Tweets are a little weird, but let’s give the man his due. He has introduced a bill with Dick Durbin that will require the U.S. Supreme Court to allow cameras in its court room unless the majority of the court decide, on a case-by-case review, that the presence of camera would deny a party due process. There might be some separation of powers concerns over this – who has the right to dictate the rules in a federal court house? Is that a legislative or judicial function? And I suppose Justice Scalia may literally kick and scream over being dragged into the 21st century. But I hope this passes. There is no good reason to ban public access to the federal courts.
