NOT ALL TOMS ARE TERRIFIC
I know that there are a lot of Tom Brady haters out there. And I don’t really get it. The guy has had an amazing run. Why begrudge his success? I’m not a Patriots fan at all, but I have always respected Brady.
Until this week. On August 22, the United States Patent and Trademark Office rejected Brady’s application to trademark the nickname “Tom Terriffic.” Now, as any sports fan knows, there is one Tom Terrific and that would be Tom Seaver. Seaver is one of the best pitchers in baseball history and a champion in every sense of the word.
Apparently, Brady tried to add an “f” to “terrific,” spelling it “terriffic” in a deflategate-like attempt to pull the wool over the USPTO. They would have none of it. As the Office noted: “the nickname TOM TERRIFIC points uniquely and unmistakably to Tom Seaver, and the fame or reputation of Tom Seaver as ‘Tom Terrific’ is such that a connection between Mr. Seaver and the applied-for goods would be presumed.” Application denied.
So, since that extra “f” is now going to waste I’ll use it: You must be F’ing kidding me Tom. Why don’t you, Gisele and your kids go ahead and try to trademark the Brady Bunch while you’re at it?
