Self Regulation Trumps New Laws (For Now)
Good news for all those folks that think there are too many laws on the books already. The FTC has indicated that it favors industry self regulation of behavioral advertising rather than Congress passing new laws. Julie Brill, a commission member noted that the “Commission is not calling for regulation right now.” Her comments came at a privacy conference held earlier this week. The key words there I think, are “right now.” The FTC is reserving its options. Which means that the industry should act sensibly or risk what probably no one wants – Congress getting involved.
