Slippery Slope In California

I am speaking here of the metaphorical kind. A law recently passed via California’s referendum process will require the 73,000 registered sex offenders in that state to notify local police whenever they create a username on any Web site. Here’s an interesting article that discusses the pros and the cons of the new law. Very briefly, the pros are that the law allows police to track the online activities of registered sex offenders. The cons are that it allows police to track the activities, to a degree, of anyone with whom the sex offender interacts online. And while we may be willing to make that trade when it comes to sex offenders, are we willing to accept a similar plan for all criminals? Should we? That is the slippery slope argument in a nutshell. What do you think? Does this bother you? Is this one more reason why you’re glad you don’t live in California?
