Social Media In The Classroom

I posted on December 18 about a recent decision in California where a federal court blocked a school from disciplining a student for an offensive YouTube posting. Here’s an article from Slate that discusses the advantages of embracing social media in the classroom. The point is that schools face an almost impossible task in trying to keep students off the sites, so why not find ways to incorporate them in the classroom? As I said the December 18 post, despite the California ruling, schools will probably be able to discipline students for social network abuses so long as the school can show some disruption to the educational process. The question is, however, is there a way to channel students’ natural curiosity with this tool? I suspect we will see.
