Outside The Office

Whether watching Legally Blonde with her two attorney sisters, or watching Suits with her financial planner/lawyer husband, for Erica Groman, the legal field is all in the family. Though, for Erica, it’s less about the legal, more about the family. This is what drives excellence in her day to day, and in her practice.

Erica grew up in the Symmes Township area, the oldest of four, living a classic Cincinnati childhood. She met her husband while working college holidays at Kenwood Mall. He dreamed of being a lawyer, and she was completing a degree in exercise physiology. Upon graduating however, fate took an interesting twist when he pursued his MBA, while she decided medical school did not feel as interesting as law school. It wasn’t until after she was fully practicing and had her first baby, that, while watching Suits (a tv comedy/drama about two lawyers) on maternity leave, with her husband, he felt inspired to return to school for a law degree. She happily supported his decision.

Erica is a boy mom. She has three sons, ages 6, 4 and 2. Amazingly, in addition to all of her other responsibilities, she is her oldest son’s kindergarten classroom parent. “It has been a lot of fun. My son lights up when he sees me. We are still at that age where he loves me being there.”

She still maintains her love of exercise physiology at home, integrating her wellness knowledge into healthy eating and exercise practices with her family. Her Peloton bike and treadmill have been a source of convenient cardio (her favorite form of exercise) for both her and her husband. She also grew up a tennis player and has recently begun introducing her sons to the sport.

Erica and her sister Natalie are both attorneys at Bricker Graydon, and were in fact, hired at the same time and placed in the Estate Planning practice group. Her other sister Jacqueline is also an attorney in the area. Although Erica started practicing several years before her younger sisters, they have definitely bonded over this experience. And yes, it’s true – they have watched Legally Blonde together. She also has a brother who is an engineer, and a very, very proud mother.

Erica is passionate about reading – especially reading books in tandem with her mom and sisters. “It is a great way to connect with family members and friends – talking about books, sharing stories that we like or didn’t like. I’ll even research different books to make sure I’ll like them before reading them, and if I decide to invest my time in one, I’ll order one for my mom and sisters so they can read it at the same time.”

She has spent time giving back to the community by drafting Wills for first responders, a clear reflection of the value she places on family. She finds the work incredibly rewarding. “You really feel like you are giving back to the people that need documents, maybe more so than others, in the higher risk profession they are in. And they are very grateful.”

Speaking of values, Erica’s consist of compassion, grace, honesty, loyalty, patience and trust both in herself, and in her relationships with clients, family and friends. “I am committed to the people I am trying to help. It’s hard to trust someone if they don’t feel like you are there for them.” This is exactly what we all want in a friend, family member and attorney.
